Serena Williams was the #1 ranked singles player in 8 tournaments between 2002 & 2017. She has won the second most Grand Slam Singles titles (23) of all time. But then her life changed. Serena married Alexis Ohanian in 2017, the co-founder of Reddit (a social news website) and a very wealthy entrepreneur. A short time later, a baby daughter, Olympia, was born. Serena took a year off from tennis and focused on being a mother.
Returning to play in the French Open in June, Serena was informed she had lost her #1 ranking during her time off for her pregnancy. She battled through 3 rounds, never really showing her previous A-game, then before playing a much anticipated match against Maria Sharapova, Serena pulled out of the French Open before the 4th round because of a pectoral injury.
That brings up to this week and Serena is seeded #25 in the opening round of Wimbledon. She faced Dutch tennis player Arantxa Rus (ranked #180) who surprisingly put on an aggressive battle, finally succumbing to defeat 7-5, 6-3.
I have covered Serena Williams since she was a teenager (about 17-1/2) and have seen her at her best. She seems to be playing at about 75%, but I have faith the legend called Serena will make a comeback to 100% before the U.S. Open in August.
